Study days
All faculties hold different study days throughout the year, giving students a chance to really get involved in their learning. These days are all about stepping away from regular classwork and trying things out for yourself. It’s a chance to experiment, explore, and learn by doing. Depending on the subject, students might spend the day running science experiments, learning new computer skills, working on textiles projects, getting creative with art, taking part in music sessions, or even trying out hospitality activities. These hands-on experiences help students understand their subjects better and make learning feel more fun and meaningful.
Open days
Open days are a great chance for students and staff to catch up, reconnect, or even meet new people. Events like the Big Day In and Harmony Day happen every year, and they’re always a hit with both students and supervisors, who consistently give really positive feedback. These days create a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere where everyone can get involved. They’re a fun way for students to meet others from different classes or faculties while taking part in activities that are creative, hands-on, and genuinely enjoyable. Overall, open days make the school community feel more connected and give everyone a break from the usual routine.
Excursions
Excursions add even more variety to the learning experiences students get at SDEHS. Different faculties regularly plan trips to all kinds of interesting places, giving students the chance to explore their subjects outside the classroom. Some of the popular destinations include Olympic Park, the Art Gallery of NSW, the Nicholson Museum, the Environmental Education Centre, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. These excursions let students see real-world examples of what they’re learning, making their studies feel more engaging, memorable, and enjoyable.
Student Leadership Group
The Student Leadership Group (SLG) works closely with SDEHS staff to make sure students’ ideas, interests, and needs are heard. Being part of the SLG gives students plenty of chances to build important skills like how to plan and run projects, work as a team, take the lead when needed, and follow through on what they start. Members are encouraged to speak up, get involved, and make things happen. Their goal is to create positive changes that benefit not just individual students, but the whole school community. Through their efforts, the SLG helps make the school a more supportive, inclusive, and student-focused place.
Social justice
Our school offers lots of opportunities for students to get involved in meaningful community activities. Throughout the year, we run events that support different organisations focused on social justice and helping people in need. These experiences encourage students to take part in humanitarian projects, learn about real-world issues, and think about how they can make a positive difference. Events like Harmony Day and Diversity Day give students the chance to celebrate inclusion, learn about others’ experiences, and contribute to a more caring and connected school community.
